Be Part of Bringing our Film to Life

We are raising money to bring to life the short film When the Prey, written by Assaf Manor, directed by Nitzan Levinson, and produced by Joelle Tourneur. We are asking for $7k for pre production, filming and post production. This will include costumes, equipment, and more.

Filming will take place in Los Angeles in mid-July.

Pre production begins in June, where we will cast our actors, find the perfect locations, organize make-up, costumes and production design, find the precise cinematographic choices with camera trials and hold rehearsals with the actors.

Characters:
Ariel, (played by Assaf Manor), a young author thrust into fame by his semi-autobiographical novel about surviving abuse, is forced to confront the past when he unexpectedly crosses paths with the man who inspired it. As old wounds reopen, the line between victim and perpetrator begins to blur.

Dom, a gruff Southern man skilled at suppressing his emotions, finds himself unraveling when he runs into his ex—the one who knows the darkest parts of him and shared them with the world.

Synopsis:
With the success of his debut novel—a semi-autobiographical story about surviving abuse—Ariel stands at a pivotal moment in his career. Everything now hinges on his next big idea. The only problem: he doesn’t have one. Then, the man who inspired that first book, Dom, suddenly reappears. Despite the pain, betrayal, and unresolved anger between them, Ariel and Dom find themselves drawn to each other once more. Is it to reopen old wounds—or finally lay them to rest?

Themes:
- Gay relationships
- Love, romance, and heartbreak
- Abuse, victimhood, and empowerment
- Cancel culture
- Art and trauma
- Representation in media

In When the Prey, I wanted to dive headfirst into the complicated gray areas of a failed relationship—and the process of talking about it, making sense of the pain, and asking: Who’s to blame? I didn’t want to shy away from the messy, uncomfortable parts. I wanted to confront them, embrace them, and place them at the heart of the film. I believe anyone who’s ever lost a connection, or created something from that loss, will see themselves in these characters.

I also wanted to explore the double-edged sword of how we look at trauma in film and tv. Creativity can be essential for surviving and processing pain, but there’s also a sort of strange reward for putting your trauma on display in the name of art. It can start to feel like there’s an incentive to stay in that space, to keep identifying with your own victimhood. It’s a messy, uncomfortable gray area—and that’s exactly what I wanted to dig into.
