Cycling across the USA
Hello out there! My name is Elijah McCall and I’m a passionate cyclist pursuing a calling, cycling across the USA! I am looking to start in April and take about three months to finish.
Riding across the US has been a dream since I was in college where I got my first taste of bicycle touring. Over spring break a friend and I cycled 200+ miles to the coast of NC. That was 2003.
After college I moved to Mexico to become a teacher as it had also been a dream to live abroad and I dove right in. I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) from 2006-2011 and cycled Mexican streets. On a Tuesday night in 2009 I had a cycling accident, being hit by a bus, and broke my femur. After four months of recuperation and physical therapy I returned to cycling and my passion continues to grow. Fulfilling the dream of living abroad and overcoming the horrible experience of breaking my leg reaffirm my calling.
In 2012 I got married and in 2013 we moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I have been working as an ESL teacher since. With the day to day routine, cycling on weekends, etc. I had put the dream off. Now is the time though. My wonderful wife is supportive of my undertaking. I have found many ways to ignore this calling, but it won’t leave me alone. I know I will never be able to live with myself if I don’t do this and I can’t put it off any more.
I am asking for your help. I need to buy a touring bicycle and camping equipment, food during the trip, and sometimes pay to camp. I’m going to live as basically as possible, spending money on food and trying to camp free of charge. I’m estimating this will all total around $3,500.
You might not be able to donate now but you can help me a lot by making noise about this campaign, sharing this page on facebook or other social media to help me get the word out, and of course good vibes and prayers are always welcome. Every donor will receive a postcard with sincere appreciation and an update of the bike trip.
I greatly appreciate any and all donations. I’m very much in need of a small sabbatical and the sense of accomplishment, amazement, and inspiration that a trip like this brings. The more I reflect on my life and what I feel I’m supposed to do, the more I realize that this trip is an imperative. I have no choice and I’m stoked about it!!!
