Type 1 diabetes is a terrible disease, after being diagnosed at age 11, Courtney is now dealing with the life-altering complications 20 years later. As she said: "It turns out I'm not Wonderwoman, and everything the doctors told me could happen has started happening to me". After many years of battling diabetes, in August 2019, diabetic retinopathy had taken her left eye. Though the retinal detachment surgery went well, the prior damage done left her with no central vision and very little peripheral. Courtney was still feeling very grateful and positive considering she still had good eyesight in her right eye. At the beginning of 2020, that gratefulness came to a pause when a drastic change entered her life. The retina in her right eye started detaching, leaving her with no vision in that eye. Being an independent single mother working as a hairstylist, life for her and her daughter has become very difficult. Courtney has now been off work for 2 months and hasn't been able to drive her own car since the first of the new year. When laser treatment couldn't save the retina, she had to go under for the third time to attempt a retinal reattachment. Due to subconjunctival hemorrhaging, she went under again on March 4 for her 4th surgery in six months. The doctor is unsure how many surgeries this will take but he and Courtney both hold high hopes that she will someday open her eyes and watch her daughter continue to grow up. Thank you for taking the time to read her story, any amount will go a long way and will be greatly appreciated. The money she receives will go towards medical bills/expenses as well as living necessities for her and her daughter during this crisis. Please be an Angel and help her conquer this journey <3
