Dilmi's story

Hello, I’m Dilmi Raveena Yahathugoda!

I am a 20-year old student recently accepted to the Doctor of Medicine program at Grodno State Medical University in Belarus. At the age of 10, I had my first scholarship examination at Devananda College, Ambalangoda in southern Sri Lanka. Through my high score on the exam, I was selected to study at Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda, where I remained a student from grades 6 to 13.

In 2009, my younger brother was born who has Down syndrome. From that time onwards, my mother, father, my second brother, my cousins and I made great sacrifices to make him have a better position. From the day he was born, our family has done nothing but loving him very much. My mother gained a degree in special needs education because of him. While my mother and father were thinking about my little brother’s education, my mom joined a special needs education center and went on a program to help mothers and children with Down syndrome to improve their child’s status.

I was just 9 years old then and I had a childhood dream to become a medical doctor when I saw the obstacles that people with Down syndrome face. Due to the difficulty of enrolling children in school, some parents gave up on teaching their children. They can’t go on public transport, which makes them uncomfortable. As a result, children with special needs got trapped inside. Because of these obstacles, parents undergo a lot of mental and emotional harassments and this hinders the development of these special needs children’s mental and physical development too.  We also had to face these things too. But because of the efforts of my parents, my brother is now in his second year of school and we are all helping him with his education.

After seeing  these things, I realized that even if I wanted to change those things, I would have to adjust my situation in order to change society’s attitudes. Then I decided to become a genetic doctor. From then until now, I continued my education so that I could achieve my dream. In 2015, I sat for my O/L examinations (similar to the British system to prepare for University) and was able to take eight “A” passes and one “B” pass. After that, I chose the bio science stream for my A/L’s and went on to study, where I got an A pass for Chemistry, a B pass for Biology and a B pass for Physics.

After my A/L exams, I decided to study abroad medicine to achieve my goal. Since I want to graduate and return to practice as a doctor in SriLanka, I decided to apply to the Grodno State Medical University (GrSMU), a world famous, registered University in the SriLankan Medical Council. I have registered in GrSMU for the academic year 2020/2021 and now I got the offer letter from GrSMU. I have attached a photo of my acceptance letter here.

My father is a television repairman and my mother runs a sewing business. I also help my mother to earn money through the sewing business. On my journey to this day, my father already spent all the money he can for me and my two brothers and my little brother’s education.  With the impact of Covid-19 our family has not been able to earn enough to cover my University expenses.
