Support SNC colleague Joe Cannon

My name is Joe Cannon, and for those of you who do not know me, I have worked for the SNC IAS Operations team for nearly ten years.

In July of 1997, I was fortunate to meet the most impactful and incredible person of my life, Jennifer Bednarek.  It was not long after meeting Jennifer that I knew this beautiful and vibrant woman was the person who I wanted to share the rest of my life with. The following July, Jennifer made me the happiest man in the world when she married me. During the past 21 years, she has been my best friend, the best wife a man could ask for, and the most amazing mother to our children.

Our world was shattered in 2012 when Jennifer was diagnosed with an aggressive Stage 3B breast cancer.  Our daughter Kayleigh was just 2 years old, and our son Matthew was 6 years old.  The picture of our family below was taken shortly before our world was turned upside down by the diagnosis. Our lives would never be the same.

Following the diagnosis, Jennifer underwent a mastectomy for tumor removals, a total hysterectomy to prevent ovarian cancer, and an aggressive battery of chemo and radiation therapy sessions for the following year to fight the cancer into a remission.

In April of 2018, I took Jennifer to the ER at Sky Ridge Medical Center for severe back and rib pain that Jennifer was having.  The ER doctors informed us that Jennifer’s severe pain was the result of the cancer having metastasized into her ribs and spinal column. After undergoing over 8 hours of surgery, Jen spent the next couple of days in the Intensive Care Unit at Sky Ridge hospital due to the severity of some complications experienced during the surgery.  After another week of recovery in the hospital, Jennifer returned home and underwent a series of other chemo and hormone therapies in the months that followed. At this point she could no longer work outside of our home as a licensed Social Worker.

Jennifer is an amazing mother who puts her kids first and would do anything to make sure they had what they needed even in her time of need. Through all of this, she ran the Cannon house and took care of Matthew and Kayleigh’s needs to enable me to remain focused on my SNC career and the amazing work we have been accomplishing in the IAS business area.

When I returned home from work on Thursday, 9/26/2019, Jennifer told me she was having severe headaches and trouble breathing.  We went to the ER at Sky Ridge Medical Center where Jennifer was evaluated and once again diagnosed with further advancement of the cancer into her lungs, brain, and bones.  Jennifer was admitted into the hospital to receive several blood transfusions, was placed on oxygen, and a series of IV medications. Then on Sunday, 9/29/2019, the team of Sky Ridge doctors and Jennifer’s Oncologist recommended that she transition into hospice care.  The following morning we shattered the lives of Matthew and Kayleigh with the news that no children should have to receive.

As much as I have been reluctant to ask for help, we can’t do this alone.  We were fortunate to have assistance from out of state family members such as Jennifer’s Mom to help out with the round-the-clock caregiving that Jennifer now requires.  Due to a medical issue with Jennifer’s Dad, her Mom has to return to Wisconsin. While the basic hospice staff visits a couple times per week are covered by our insurance, the majority of the caregiving support is not. We now need to privately pay for in-home caregivers 16 hours per day for the remainder of Jennifer’s time with us.

Several people have asked how they can offer support for Jennifer and our family, and contributing to this fund is the most useful form of support you can offer.  Your donations will go toward the out-of-pocket medical expenses and help fill the financial gap our family has with having to privately pay for in-home caregivers 16 hours per work day for Jennifer.  Any contribution to this fund not only provides tangible help and support of the Cannon family during this incredibly difficult time, but exemplifies the best of the SNC family spirit!

We are so grateful for our family, friendships, relationships, and being surrounded by caring people like you. Terminal cancer at age 45 with 2 young kids is something no mother or family should have to go through.  Thank you to all who are praying for us, helping, offering to help, etc. Your generosity and support is sincerely appreciated!
