Please help us support the Arnolds as they transition to having Helena's mom, Fatma, live with them fulltime. I know Helena and Layne have an army of people who love them and will walk with them through this transition - whether prayerfully, emotionally or financially.
At only 30 years old, Fatma was diagnosed with a severe autoimmune disease called scleroderma. At 40 years old, the disease started causing amputations. At first, it was a fingertip that turned gangrenous from a small wound. In 2012, it was a series of amputations that started with a thumb, then the hand, then the arm below the elbow. She had to relearn how to do everything after losing her dominant hand. But as the eternal fighter, she never gave up and found her new normal. In 2016, it was another devastating amputation of her leg below the knee. Once again she was determined to find a new normal and continue living on her own, driving, cooking, etc. Most recently the amputation of her second leg has impacted her the hardest. She has lost her ability to drive and live on her own. Throughout all of this, Helena has been Fatma's translator and primary caretaker.
Moving in with her daughter, son-in-law, and two young grandkids has been a difficult adjustment as their home is not wheelchair accessible. Most significantly she does not have access to a bathroom. Her new room is close to a half bath but is not big enough for a wheelchair and does not have a bath. It would be amazing to be able to convert the half bath into a full bath with wheelchair access so she can safely use it and regain a little independence, privacy, dignity, and normalcy.
The Arnolds have done their due diligence and received multiple quotes to transform the half bath for Fatma's needs. The total cost is nearly $20,000. This GoFundMe is to help them with some of the financial burdens and to spread the word to pray for Fatma and the Arnolds as they transition to their new normal. Thank you for reading this, thank you for praying for her, thank you for helping her.
