My story like many others that's incarcerated is a real tragedy. I've served 25 years behind bars for crimes not charged or proven to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt. You heard right, that is right, 25 long years for a crime I was never indicted for. It will be the First Step Act of 2018, that was signed into law, that will lead to my freedom.
It's been hard and rough, behind these walls. I've been through hell and fought with the devil and, won my soul back. I've suffered greatly and endured many adversities. I've been tested by God, and I've been tested by man, and my greatest test was conquering myself, as well as overcoming my fears.
The time has come for brothers like myself serving lengthy sentences for crack to be released from Federal Prison. I got a lot to fix. For example, most importantly the relationship with my family. The sad truth is that I will be released to my love ones. But to the world, I want recognize. I have no money, no home of my own, no car, no medical insurance, and no job offers prior to my release. It's an outrageous injustice. All my time and energy is directed towards fighting for my freedom. Of course, I need help and support in preparation for re-entry back into society. I can't do it alone. Not even the most resourceful and capable man can make it alone in the world. For over two decades I've been alone and done it alone, and I've survived. But people in prison get their strength from the outside world. I believe there is nothing that we can't do if we come together for common cause.
Right now I'm preparing myself for the changes in the new drug laws that will affect my sentence. This new law of course will apply to me, because I'm a first time offender of a non-violent drug offense. I'm a Political Prisoner of an unfair drug war in the early 90's. I'm serving a sentence under a law that virtually everyone, Congress, both Presidents, recent and current, has agreed is biased, unjust, unwarranted and undermines the objectives of the Sentencing Reform Act of 1986 as well as it has created a radically disproportionate impact. It is an undeniable fact that the Sentencing disparity has been devastating in the African-American community, where black defendants were incarcerated for crack related crimes at substantially higher proportions than whites. Today, I'm optimistic and excited at the same time about the positive changes in the drug laws. The law makers are finally overhauling the old drug laws.
While reflecting on these last two plus decades of incarceration; Prison in an ironic way was a blessing in disguise. "Most of the Epistles were written in prison." It is here within these dungeon walls of brick, iron, and steel. I've learned a great deal about myself. I have been through a lot, and have seen a lot in the past twenty years. I have been on a great journey-an inward journey; more like an odyssey. Today, I am more on a spiritual journey to live at a higher degree of consciousness. Each day is a journey of its own. Life is a Journey, not a destination. It's a series of lessons, both negative and positive, good and bad. These lessons has and is continuing to prepare me for the world, and the many difficulties of life.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and understanding that God blessed you with the Love being the greatest gift of all. May the Lord bless you, and your family....
