Many of you know me as Batty Banks, the drag performer. Others know me as Jaylen Bastos, the wildlife ecologist, educator, and entrepreneur. Both of these parts of my life are built around community, creativity, and showing up for the people around me.
On Friday, August 21, unexpectedly, I was involved in a severe bike crash. I landed directly on my shoulder, resulting in a Grade 3 ACS separation of my collarbone and shoulder. I am now facing reconstructive surgery, several months of immobilization, and a long 4-6 month course of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
For the foreseeable future, I won’t be able to perform, work normally, or take on many of the projects that allow me to support myself.
As a self-employed artist, educator, this injury means losing a significant portion of my income.
I’m still waiting for surgery and further consultations, and honestly, I’m scared about what the coming months will look like.
So I’m asking for something that isn’t always easy for me to ask for: help.
If you’ve ever laughed at one of my shows, learned something from me, supported my work, danced at one of my events, followed along with my wildlife education, or simply consider me a friend, this is an opportunity to show up for me while I heal.
Your donation will help me cover the costs of living and recovery while I’m unable to work. Specifically:Rent, food, transportation,
medical and rehabilitation expenses,
and the everyday costs of getting through several months without my usual income.
Any amount truly makes a difference and if you’re not in a position to donate, sharing this fundraiser is just as meaningful. You never know who in your network might be able to help.
Thank you for reading, sharing, donating, checking in, and sending love. I have a long road ahead, but I’m hoping I don’t have to walk it alone. ❤️
With much love! From your (soon to be) dive rolling nature diva
