Battling The Greatest Challenge Of Her Life - Guillain-Barre Syndrome

On May 19, 2018, Linda Hood met friends at 1:00 am to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.  She and her friends watched the Hallmark Movie Harry & Megan: A Royal Romance, the menu was tea, champagne, scones, and fresh fruit. All wore hats and fascinators.  The wedding started at 6am. Everyone was chit-chatting about who was in attendance and what was being worn.  Occasionally Linda would get up from her seat and stretch, when questioned about what she was doing, she said her feet were tingling and she thought it was a touch of neuropathy.  What we did not know was as Linda was watching the Royal Wedding her body was being attacked by a serious bacterium.

Linda left the party early to catch a plane to Texas to visit a friend.  Before taking off she called her friend and said she was feeling a little sick but felt she would feel better by the time she got there. When she arrived in Texas, she could not walk, her body was in total pain, she found it hard to breathe. She was taken to a small hospital (Metroplex in Killen, Texas) where she was incubated. The next day she was transferred to Scott and White Hospital in Temple, TX. The report from the hospital staff said her body was attacking itself.  They thought it might be Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS).  With Guillain-Barre syndrome, a person's infection-fighting system attacks their own nervous system.  In Linda's case this syndrome rendered her totally paralyzed with her only being able to respond yes or no to questions by moving her head slightly.  After completing all the tests, she was given a treatment for GBS within days of being in the hospital.

In June she was moved to Baylor, Scott & White Continuing Care Hospital where they continue to give her 24-hour care along with physical and speech therapy. She just recently was removed from the ventilator.  Linda has been hospitalized since May 19th.  She has made many strides towards getting back to the Linda we all know. She is talking, moving both sides, sitting up and growing stronger with each day.

People that know her see her as friendly, generous and a loved one to many. She is passionate about everything that she does.  She is a Clinical Oncology Researcher, skier, swimmer, biker, marathon runner, self-styled philanthropist and an all-out adventure seeker.  Linda has worked on clinical trials all over the country and all over the world doing the things she loves.  She has attended every Summer Olympics game as a volunteer since 1984.  Linda has raised significant sums for a variety of charitable causes with the Big 5K Race that she founded in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Now Linda needs our help.

We all want to see the Linda that we know and love, return to the person described above.  Even though she is getting back to that person, she has a long way to go.  She is getting to the point of being able to be moved to a rehabilitation facility in Texas specializing in Guillain-Barre syndrome.  The cost for such a facility is approximately $50,000.00 per month.  After about 3 months in such a facility Linda should be able to return to Woodbury (St. Paul, Minnesota).

Please help fund this account to get "our" Linda Hood back.

Goal:  $150,000.00
