Battling Cancer, Please Help Me Keep My Home!
Donation protected
Hello. My name is Kathy Roberts. I live in Fayetteville, AR. First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this.
I'm hoping to call on the kindness of others to help me keep my home. My house, which I have lived in for 31 years, is due to be auctioned by the state in May 2022. Like many others, times have been difficult lately. For me, the past few years especially. Here’s a little of my story:
I am 65 years old, a widow and a mother of an adult daughter with disabilities. We live in our house together and I am her caretaker. My adult sister, who is also disabled and very sick, lives in the basement apartment attached to the house. She doesn’t drive, so I help take her where she needs to go. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and have been receiving chemo ever since. I now have stage 4 metastatic colon cancer in my liver. Once cancer gets into the liver, it’s considered incurable. Unfortunately, it has recently begun to spread.
Several years ago, Wells Fargo decided to sell my house and auctioned it off for the $24k my husband had borrowed against the equity. I used my small savings to hire an attorney to avoid eviction. It worked and we kept the house, but Wells Fargo did not inform me when they returned the house to my name. By the time I was aware, I already owed several thousand dollars in property taxes with penalties.
My financial situation hasn’t allowed me to pay the mounting debt of property taxes. I receive disability, $812 a month, which barely covers necessities and can’t begin to cover the medication needed for my cancer treatment.
I don’t see how it’s possible to afford rent on my fixed income if my house is sold and we must move. With all the health issues my sister, my daughter, and I are dealing with, losing our home and moving would be extremely difficult.
Any help you feel like giving would be appreciated beyond words. Thank you for your time and for listening to my story.
