Meet Dylan. A bright, amazing second grader with an infectious smile. Dylan is many things...giver of the best hugs, Mickey Mouse fan, wildly popular at school, Chick Fil-A lover, bringer of joy and sunshine. He can literally light up a room.
Last, but not least, Dylan is a warrior. He has fought for his life and won. And now he is entering into battle for a second time.
As a very young child, Dylan was diagnosed with cancer. B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) to be specific. Along with his mom, Shawnetta, his friends and family, and a team of talented doctors, Dylan took on B-ALL with bravery and strength. And in October 2023, he was victorious.
Since that time, Dylan has been in remission. He has flourished and enjoyed getting to be a kid, carefree and happy, playing video games, reading Elephant and Piggy books, excelling in school, and hoping to one day go on a Disney Cruise.
In February 2026, Dylan developed some concerning symptoms. Because he is blessed with a dedicated, loving mom in Shawnetta, and capable and attentive physicians, he was taken in for a check up right away. The hope was that it was nothing...an acute illness, a benign finding, something that would pass quickly. It was not.
Within a matter of days, Dylan's doctors confirmed that his cancer had returned. Roughly 10-15% of children who have overcome B-ALL will experience a relapse of the disease. And the fight to overcome the diagnosis a second time is lengthy and challenging.
Dylan and his mom are staring down months of hospitalization and intensive, aggressive treatment, not to mention an immense financial burden. The process will be not only physically grueling, but emotionally as well. While we cannot take away the battle Dylan is facing, we can join him in the fight.
