Hello, everyone! I had the pleasure of meeting Ate Nathalie and her husband Kuya Cris while completing my preceptorship. I decided to take the initiative and share their story with all of you. I know our community has grown tremendously in the past few years. I believe we can all work together to help the Basuil Family cover their medical expenses at Chinook Regional Hospital.
Ate Nathalie initially came in for a hypertensive crisis at Chinook Regional Hospital. The unexpected event led to their admission to a medical floor where I met them. With her blood pressure in the 200s, many tests needed to be done to investigate the cause of hypertension and further investigate how this affects her overall health. This stressful event was even more emphasized as they thought about the medical bills they would face. Without insurance, they worry that this will be impossible for them to pay for on a tourist visa. They pleaded to be discharged earlier and asked for medications she could take instead to lessen the costs of hospitalization.
A couple weeks later, ate Nathalie's condition has worsened. She had to be admitted once again for a stroke, which affected her vision bilaterally. I remember approaching the couple with fear and pain in their eyes, reaching their arms to me when they returned to the unit.
I hope you can spread the word and share their story so we can help them get through this difficult time. Every cent counts!
Here is the story their cousin shared with me:
I wanted to share a difficult situation that a family in our community is facing.
The head of the Basuil family initially came to Canada as a Cook on a work permit in xxxxx, and his wife and 10-year-old son joined him shortly after. Nathalie soon started working in a popular sandwich restaurant. The head of the family was unjustly terminated from his work after he paid his employer $4,500, who promised him a work extension. As a result, they all lost their status and had to apply for a tourist visa to stay legally in the country. They’re waiting for the result of their Human and Compassionate Ground application, which they also applied for, and it may take about 2 years to process. But until then, they’re not able to secure any employment.
Currently, they are facing significant hospital bills (about $16,000 as of Tuesday, March 25, 2025). The wife had to undergo a series of medical examinations affecting her heart, her vision, and her overall health. Nathalie needs to stay longer at the hospital until they find the best way to help her recover. She is also being sent to Calgary later in her admission for further assessments and treatments. This family is in urgent need of our support.
