Basil is a 12-year-old Mainecoon mix. He has been a major part of our lives since we first adopted him at 1 year old so long ago. Basil is a well-known member of the neighborhood, locals know him from his leopard print baby cart and his frequent trips to the store with us, and his fabulous wardrobe. Basil is far from your average 'cat' - he is 'people'! Basil has even served as a therapy animal for cancer patients and in recent years helps me with my diabetes. He is an irreplaceable member of our home.
In July Basil was diagnosed with FIP and began a treatment program. He went from 18 pounds down to 11, he was severely anemic. Treatment has been extremely costly and stressful for him. Unfortunately, his first veterinary team was not experienced enough with treatment and there were medication interaction issues that prevented his treatment from being fully effective. He was recovering and gained weight and was back to 16 pounds, then he started to go backward. He lost weight again down to 10.8 pounds and had other negative FIP symptoms. September 1st would have been his last day but it turned into day ONE all over again and we are doing another 84 days now with his new vet that thankfully is well versed in the process. His anemia is almost gone and his kidneys are recovering from the previous medication. He still has at least two lab visits left and his medication through the end of October. His current vet has him on additional supplements and an IV every other day helping to flush his kidneys while they heal. His new bloodwork is looking 'in the right direction' according to the new Dr.
We have both been paying for all we can throughout this long experience with him -however as a teacher and a sales agent it has been hard for the family to financially continue to take care of our boy. Some friends involved in Basil's fight with us encouraged us to create this go fund me so that some fellow cat parents could show Basil some possible love and support in his battle with FIP. We are extremely grateful for anything anyone can contribute towards his care and thank you for caring for our boy!
- The amount I posted reflects an estimate for treatment costs and monitoring expenses for the remainder of Basil's treatment program.
