Basil's cancer treatment, #BasilBitesBack

Donation protected
Basil  is a 6 year old happy hound mix rescue. In October, she was diagnosed with soft tissue grade-3 sarcoma on her hind leg. It’s a very aggressive 8-inch mass. BIG THANKS to our donors we were able to do the amputation surgery 10/17 to remove the cancer. She will also need to undergo precautionary chemotherapy treatments. And follow up x-rays every 6months. This will all be done at VCA South paws in Fairfax.

What your donations will do for Basil:

-Helping with her chemotherapy treatments.
500 per treatment, Oncologist recommended 5 treatments
-Pain management medication/vitamin and supplements /holistic remedies
-Any future vet visits including x-rays to keep her cancer free

*Any form of support gives us fuel to keep doing the best we can for our girl!

While amputation seems barbaric, the doctors are simply removing the source of pain. After a 2-3 week healing period, she can walk with 3 legs. (Day 1 after surgery basil's is walking, and slowly adjusting to her new lifestyle quite well) Dogs distribute 60% of their weight in the front legs. The median survival time for dogs with soft tissue sarcomas is 3 years and 8 months with surgical treatment and 6 years and 2 months with surgical and radiation treatment.

Basil is loved by many, and we want her to live healthy and happy!

Basil's condition:
9/21/2019 - Basil began showing symptoms of pain for the first time when we noticed a swollen muscle on her hind leg. We took her to the VCA emergency animal hospital in Alexandria. VCA gave us anti-inflammatory/pain medication and told us that it was a hard lump, not a swollen muscle.
9/23/2019 - We took Basil to our usual vet for a cytology to test the lump.  Results came back inconclusive.
9/28/2019 - We moved forward with a Biopsy.
10/4/2019 - Results confirmed a grade 3 soft tissue sarcoma
10/8/2019 - Basil went to VCA South Paws oncologist. She had an abdominal ultrasound and was cleared of cancer in her internal organs and lymph nodes.
10/11/2019 - Basil has an x-ray for her chest. X-ray is clear! No cancer.
10/16/2019 VCA appointment for aspiration of internal lymph node near tumor. Also scheduled blookword to prep for surgery!
10/17/2019 Amputation surgery for basil was performed.

*moving forward: Basil still needs chemotherapy treatments and follow up x-ray and tests to keep her cancer free.

About Basil:
Basil is a 6 year old hound mix. She’s had two previous owners before I adopted her. One of her previous names was Tinkerbell. She responds to any name with a "B" ( examples: Bieber,  Bulgogi, Banana, Best friend). Outside, she is full of energy and loves to run at top speed. Inside, she is a prissy princess and demands only the softest blankets to lay down with. With this princess demeanor, she rarely humors our other dog, believing she's above his fun and games. She hates the rain, and will refuse to go outside unless she has a silly raincoat on. She is a super sweet girl, who loves to be center of attention.

We hate to ask people for their hard earned money, but we are committed in trying to do the best for our girl. We want to give her the best possible treatment, pain management, and quality of life. We are looking for any amount of donation or simply spreading the word on social media.
