Basic Access for Quinto
Donation protected
Hi everyone! I’m Quinto. I’ve been involved in the queer and disability communities in Toronto for over a decade. I’ve been disabled for the past 12 years. My condition has been pretty stable and I’ve been able to live in my accessible apartment with few modifications up until this point. 8 weeks ago, however, I had surgery and my needs have changed significantly since then. I am currently in a physical rehabilitation centre while I try to line up the equipment I need to go home safely. I live below the poverty line and cannot pay out of pocket, and I’ve been unable to access other sources of funding. All I want is to go home and I’m reaching out now for the help I need in order to do that. Asking others for financial assistance is not something I take lightly at all and I’ve tried every avenue I can think of to fund this equipment before getting to this point.
What do I need? What will this equipment do for me?
- A ceiling track system, electric lift, body support for independent use, and sling for transfers are used for people who are unable to transfer independently. Having a lift system in my home will provide me with a safe way to get in and out of bed and my wheelchair, either independently or with support from my personal support workers. Crucially, this will also ensure I can recover from future surgeries at home instead of spending weeks or months in a rehab facility.
- A hospital bed that is height adjustable with power controls will allow me to be in a seated position in bed and to adjust the bed to a safe height for transfers, as well as making it easier for my PSWs to assist me with things like dressing. Having a therapeutic mattress will reduce the risk of pressure sores.
- Modifications to my wheelchair to address my change in function. My needs have changed significantly and there are several components, mostly related to positioning, that will help increase my level of function and comfort in my wheelchair.
This fundraiser is generously hosted by Rosina Kazi and Unit 2. A percentage of funds raised, as well as any unused funds, will be distributed through Unit 2 to community members in need. Learn more about Unit 2 at www.unit2.club. If you’re interested in seeing how the funds will be used, I’ve created a spreadsheet with a cost breakdown by category, viewable here: https://tinyurl.com/ust8nf7y
Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and donating.
