Base Bag Project - Piper S-J CGS

Donation protected
Hi there,
My name is Piper Sweeney-Johnston and I am a Year 9 student at Caulfield Grammar School. We have been given a project this year which is called Learning Journeys, and each student is asked to spent time doing something throughout the year that will make a difference to someone or to a community. It should be something that we feel strongly about, and we find ways to make things happen, find people to help us, and see if we can reach our goal.

I feel very sad about the amount of homeless people we have in our city. It is difficult to understand that we can’t do more to help those who are looking for a meal, a bed to sleep in or even just someone to talk to. The more research I did, the more I found out about what is already available for those less fortunate than us, it’s probably just hard for them to access this information.

So I have chosen to design and produce a Base Bag. This sturdy cotton shoulder bag has a map printed on it that shows where to find crisis accomodation, public toilets, food vans, police stations etc, as well as listing helpful phone numbers so those in need can touch base with organisations such as LifeLine, Direct Line Detox, Legal Aid and the SuicideLine. I have called it a Base Bag because for some people, this bag will be their home base, their basic but precious belongings kept in one place, their resource for finding someone to listen or somewhere to go for a meal or a bed.

The physical and mental assistance that this Base Bag can offer may help to push through difficult times, to know that help is out there for those people struggling through tough times, those people that we share our city with.

Now that I have designed the Base Bag, my Learning Journey Project has changed a bit. I have spoken to organisations who are very keen to use these Base Bags for distribution of their Food Parcels and Care Packages. Not only do I want to print more Base Bags, but I would like to ask if companies have products that they would like to donate so I can also fill the Base Bags with items like food snacks, socks, sanitary items, disposable rain jackets. I have opened this GoFundMe account in the hope that I can print more of these bags and make sure that as many people out there who need a Base Bag, are able to receive a Base Bag. I feel like these Base Bags could make a real difference to some people’s lives. I have been so surprised at the support I have received so far.

If you think you can help in anyway, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks you so much for listening.

Kind Regards,
Piper Sweeney-Johnston, Yr 9 Kurrle
