In Dayna's words:
"We have always said that life can change in an instant, and it appears that "instant" has just happened to us. This will be a whirlwind, so hold on…
The day before Christmas Eve 2024, Barry received a call from a random doctor filling in for his primary care physician. The doctor informed him that his CT scan looked suspicious for possible pancreatic cancer, with multiple unknown lesions on his liver. He said he was sorry and then just hung up. There was no follow-up, no next steps—nothing. WTF! When we received the written report of the CT scan a few days later, we were shocked at the results.
Before his CT scan on December 16th, Barry had been experiencing bloating and stomach aches for a few months, and some weight loss. Initially, these symptoms seemed normal, especially since they coincided with him cleaning up his diet by cutting out processed foods. He figured it was his gallbladder that needed to be removed because I had similar symptoms right before my gallbladder was removed last year, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
After we initiated a few calls to his doctor, who was on vacation, she scheduled a follow-up PET scan a few weeks later, and we received the results of the PET scan on Barry's 53rd birthday. Heartbreakingly, it turned out to be much worse than we had initially thought…
He was scheduled for an Endoscopic Ultrasound biopsy on January 14th as a standard procedure to confirm the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, despite previous scans and blood tests suggesting it was the case. On January 16th, we drove to UCSF for a procedure to drain the excess fluid from Barry's extremely uncomfortable distended belly. They drained over 1.5 liters of liquid from his abdomen, which improved his comfort level for the time being.
On January 22nd, Barry was officially diagnosed with a rare and aggressive pancreatic cancer type called Adenocarcinoma with Squamous Differentiation. It's Stage 4, with metastasis to his liver, bones, and some lymph nodes.
This news is life-changing and soul-shattering. There are no words for the devastation of this... I know this is a lot of information, but we wanted to keep everyone updated on our current situation and use this CaringBridge platform to share our next steps and any updates. We greatly appreciate all the love and support we have already received. Anyone who knows Barry knows he is an incredible person who shines brightly!"
