May 19, 2019, my husband was as good as dead on the table in the ER after a saddle clot (large pulmonary embolism) did its best to stop his heart from beating. But the Lord had other plans, and after multiple miracles and 100 long and arduous days in the hospital recovering, getting strong enough to breath without a ventilator and start to walk again, Barry was finally able to come back home. A few months later, his body had mostly recovered, but most people may not realize his journey wasn't over yet.
The lack of oxygen while getting CPR for 25 minutes that day had resulted in a hypoxic brain injury. It could have been MUCH worse, and has definitely improved quite a bit in the year since the event, but there remain signs of deficits in his short-term memory, executive function, processing speed, etc. For that reason, he has not yet been able to return to work or even to the fullness of meaningful relationships. Although we are so very thankful he is here and has come SO far, admittedly it has been difficult at times for those of us closest to him to lack the depth of conversation and connection we used to have with him.
Since all of this started, It feels like very little has been done to mitigate these issues, and the speech (cognitive) therapy he did receive has been limited in its effectiveness. But our family has NOT given up! Through it all we have continued to cling to the promise spoken over Barry so many times while still in the ICU fighting for his life: "He will come through this even better than he was before!" Convinced there had to be more that could be done for him, I've done many hours of research, finding leads on various modalities that show promise for further advancement in our quest to get more of "Bear" back! Our plan in March to take him to Colorado for treatment was derailed by the pandemic, but we know the Lord has directed our paths to various supplements and local options in the meantime. While always open to more supernatural healing to manifest, we also believe God's hand is on the timing of several treatments we are about to begin (e.g. neurofeedback, a home oxygen concentrator, LLLT, and possibly others).
This is where the fundraiser comes in: These things (including about $500 a month in various nutritional supplements) are not covered by insurance, so the cost will add up to quite a bit more than our regular budget over the next few months. We would truly appreciate it if you'd consider contributing to these cutting-edge treatments and help Bear get to the next level in his recovery! And whether or not you are able to give financially, please join us in believing for continued direction and the best possible results from these treatments! Thanks again and love to one and all who have supported us from day one, we couldn't have done it without you!
Phil. 1:6 "I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
