My name is Kristie and I've created this gofundme on behalf of my mom, Shelley, for her husband Barry.
Barry has been diagnosed with Interstitial Fibrosis, a type of lung/respiratory disease that affects the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs. It causes the tissue around the air sacs to become scarred and thickened which makes it difficult for oxygen to pass into hte bloodstream. This makes it very difficult to breath. The average survival rate for someone with this disease is between three and five years.
Barry was diagnosed two and a half to three years ago. It's been a very long process and it causes me great sadness to see him not able to enjoy life the way he used to be able to. Going to baseball and basket ball games, going camping. He is permanantly on oxygen and is rarely able to leave the house.
Luckily, Barry was in good enough health in other areas to be able to be put on the lung transplant list. The average wait time for lungs is around seven months, but Barry was only on the list for six weeks before donor lungs became available. As I write this my mom is waiting in the hospital for him to come out of surgery.
The reason we need help from gofundme is because this situation has greatly impacted us financially. With the many trips that we have had to take to and from UCSF for medical appointments, which require gas, food and lodging, my mom has had to miss a substantial amount of work in order to support her husband through this difficult time; and unfortunately there is no financial leave available at her employer.
We have been blessed that Barry has gotten new lungs so quickly, but we need help with the recovery process. Anything anyone can give would make this stage of our lives go much smoother. Thank you for reading and for your consideration.
