At the end of March Barry Degges was diagnosed with a brain tumor affecting his central nervous system. The cancer is called: Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL).
He is receiving his treatments at the KU Medical Cancer Center. He is checked into the hospital every 9 days and stays there for 5 days for his chemotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, Dena has to drop him off at the door as he cannot have any visitors with COVID-19. Thankfully the hospital staff has been wonderful, and he calls them angels.
He has had several:
• MRI's
• CAT Scans
• Spinal Tap Sample taken
• Steroids
• Chemotherapy
• Infusions
• Many labs drawn
• Many doctor appointments
• Many nights spent in the hospital
He is going through all of this with great support from his wife and family caring for him.
Before treatment started, Barry’s cognitive skills had decreased greatly and left him not eating and sleeping a lot. He needed someone to be with him all of time. He has gone through this with tremendous courage and relying on God's plan that has given him some peace to lean on.
He has had 6 weeks of treatment as of 6/9/20 and the doctor says the tumor is "remarkable smaller"! He will continue going in every 9 days for 4 more sessions.
The side effects had been minimal until his 3rd chemotherapy treatment 2 weeks ago. That treatment left him with substantial pain and caused swelling in his legs, hands and arms, to the point he could not walk. After working at it for 3 days he was able walk again, just in time for the next chemo treatment that started June 5th. Sadly, as of today, June 9th, the pain has returned and the side effects are in full force.
Please consider donating what you can to help Barry and Dena with their financial burden of fighting this "little bastard" (the name they have given the tumor). Barry has not worked since March 2020 and he misses it greatly. If you know him, you know he lives and thrives off of helping other people, so let's help him, it is his turn.
For Barry, a wonderful husband, father, friend and co-worker that is loved by MANY.
He is so thankful for all your thoughts and prayers.
