Barney Boy’s hip replacement

Donation protected
Hi everyone, I am fundraising for my boy Barney, a golden labradorable who needs a left hip replacement. All funds raised will go towards his surgery and rehabilitation costs. His surgery is scheduled on 3 November 2020.  Dr David Lidbetter, Orthopedic surgeon at Parramatta in Sydney will perform the surgery. Rehabilitation will follow in the months post surgery which will include water treadmill  and physio exercises . A breakdown of approximate costs that have been quoted are below:

Surgery - $8,500-$9,500
CT scan prior to surgery-
$1,500 (possible requirement)
Rehabilitation - up to $3,000

It is an incredibly expensive surgery but one that is required for Barney to continue on with a good quality of life without pain. I am putting my pride aside for my boy! In fact there isn't much I wouldn't do for my boy! I do understand  it is a big ask for people to donate especially in 2020 when there is so much financial pressure. If you are unable to donate, Barney would appreciate a get well message!

Our story
Our story began in June 2013 when I visited the local pound with a friend after losing my last labradorable 3 months earlier. I had seen Barney online and all I could think of is how my dad talked about his dog Barney when he was young. It was love at first sight for Barney and I! Barney licked all my tears from my cheeks and in that moment we rescued each other!

If you don’t know Barney he has the most beautiful and sweet personality. He loves life, people, and other dogs! He is active and enjoys day care with all his friends. He is goofy and will do something silly everyday to make you laugh! He is my mate and my confidant! He knows all my flaws and vulnerabilities and he doesn’t care! He is pure love.

It became clear within six months of bringing Barney home that he had some health issues including hip displaiser and allergies. I could not get pet insurance given his pre-existing conditions and being a rescue. Discrimination within the pet insurance industry is a whole other story!

Barney and I developed a good relationship with our vet, Michael Archinal, who has guided us through the last 7.5 years, through all the ups and downs, and there have been many! It’s been a roller coaster ride of emotions. Barney has had many therapies such as regular zydax injections, antinol, JD prescription food, water treadmill sessions, and physio to manage his hips. Michael said he will tell me when its time to  investigate hip replacement surgery. There have been so many ‘are we there yet?’ moments  over the past 7.5 years, with Michael replying, ‘no we are not there yet!’ We thought he may actually get through his life without a new hip. We were hopeful.

However, recently after showing some significant symptoms, Barney had some x-rays which confirmed his left hip has deteriorated and it’s time to look at the hip replacement! Michael said we are there, it’s time! So our journey now continues on to the next chapter! It is a big operation for a dog and there are complications, however I have full faith that Barney will recover well and again enjoy all his activities.  I want to give Barney every opportunity to live his best life! I will provide updates on Barney’s journey to recovery!

Thank you all for just reading Barney's story!
