BIGGER - Bigger track, bigger races, bigger crowds, bigger participation. BETTER - Lets give the local kids who use our existing, small track everyday, something even better to be proud of and attract more visitors from further afield. STRONGER - Lets strengthen the links in our community, bring riders from across the country to regional level races providing a boost to the local community and economy FASTER - We've got some great riders who've finished top and top 3 for their age groups at a North regional level and many who compete at national level, lets give them the facility to go on to bigger, better, maybe even OLYMPIC things!!
We don't have much time!!!
** Another update!** we're stopping donations to the fundraising page for the moment as we've got an application in for the last bit and we don't want to end up with too much, so fingers crossed we can nail that, we'll keep you updated in the near future once we find out. We hope everyone has had a brilliant Christmas and New Year and we'll see you in 2020, get yourselves along!!**
**UPDATE!!** We did have a target of £17,000 to raise before the end of October to secure matched funding of £45k, but now, after some fantastic fundraising by EVERYONE, engagement with local businesses and councillors and some great individual support, we're now not only looking to hit that last £6,500, but as a result of all the hard work, we're pleased to announce we've had an extension on the matched funding!!!!!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE!! So how do we smash that last £6,500!!??!?!?
Still not sold... well here's the more wordy, in-depth version!
BMX racing is an exciting, engaging sport and in recent years has been added to the roster of Olympic Sports. Our BMX club is based in Bedlington, South East Northumberland and looks after anyone who wants to ride BMX whether it be for fun, for racing or just for fitness and to meet some new friends.
Don’t just take my word for how good it is, come down every Saturday 11-12, Gallagher Park, Bedlington and try it for yourself, you’ll love it!
Our track is in need of upgrade to both the track and the start gate to bring it up to scratch..
Our current track was installed by the council in 2011 to see if there was interest there and since then has been used daily by kids and adults from the local community, as well as our own weekly club coaching sessions and annual winter novice race series. We’ve seen some great success engaging local youth riders, giving them something fun and exciting to focus on as well as seeing the development of our existing racers to compete in Regional and National race series.
The majority of our riders compete at Regional and National Events and with their travelling tales of trips to the North West and further afield, they provide the inspiration for our upcoming riders. The North Region covers an area from as far down as Preston and Liverpool, all the way across and up to the Scottish borders, but with the majority of tracks based in the North West, most race weekends start with an overnight stay or an early start and a 3 hour drive to make sign on and practice.
With the upgrade of our track, we will be able to improve coaching sessions and provide the local community with a regional level track they can be proud of and we will also look to host regional level events in the coming seasons and bring more racing over to Northumberland and the North East and help continue to grow the sport in the area. These events bring between 300-400 riders, along with their families, which will not only create a buzz among locals as they watch some awesome racing thus encouraging them into the sport, but will also provide a boost to the local economy including hotels & B&Bs as well as local shops and restaurants being used by travellers from across the country who attend.
We’ve worked with our BMX neighbours to host our own winter series involving the two other tracks located an hour away in the North East, aiming specifically to give new and novice riders a taste of race life and the last series we held was attended by over 50 different riders and attracted 11 youngsters from other cycle disciplines who not only got into the North Region BMX Racing circuit, but 5 also qualified and competed at this year’s British BMX Championships held in Derby. So how can you help?
We’re hoping to commence construction of our new track in 2020 and while we’ve raised some offline funding, we’re hoping that with YOUR help and the power of Crowd Funding to be able to raise an additional £12,500 that we need, but time is tight... We’ve engaged and continue to engage with local community funds and have had some great support, notably from a fund that has agreed match funding, which if we can manage it will cover EVERYTHING we need, but this needs to be achieved by October 31st 2019. Anything we raise over the amount will be split between: Ongoing Maintenance, Training Equipment and upgrading our loan equipment and coach education for the riders who wish to move into that side of things and inspire the next generation. If we do miss the October 31stmatch funding deadline, we will set the money aside and re-apply until we raise the funding shortfall but, we would prefer this to go through time around rather than later, to avoid delays in the development of the new BMX Track. Check us out on Facebook: Barnesbury BMX or Instagram: @BarnesburyBMX to see what we’ve been upto, there’s loads of opportunity to get involved!
A little bit more General Information about us if you’re interested We are a British Cycling affiliated and Go-Ride Accredited Cycling Club based in Northumberland, who provide Cycling Activity across the disciplines of Road, Mountain Bike, Cyclo-Cross and BMX Racing for children, young people and adults. We strive to give people opportunities to get into one or more cycling disciplines, whether it is cycling for fun, building social confidence in people, competition, healthier lifestyle or just to be sociable. We offer pathways into cycling sport through the promotion of recreational and competitive activities and events We are volunteers with big hearts and our coaches and safeguarding personnel are trained and registered with British Cycling. We aim to provide a warm welcome with a community focus in all that we do, striving to offer coaching and development, competition and safeguarding in a friendly environment. We aren’t precious and link in with our cycling neighbours to cross train, help out and deliver opportunities to anyone wanting to get on a bike. Many children, young people and adults have a BMX or Mountain Bike and their use brings people together. The closest Regional Level BMX Track to us in North East England is currently in Hartlepool which is approx 42 miles away, so good facilities for BMX Racing are very limited within a reasonable travelling distance. BMX Racing is a fantastic sport, watched on TV during the Olympics by a growing army of fans, it is sociable and our regular coaching sessions have given a great platform for some of our younger member’s as they develop through childhood into adulthood and start out in employment after leaving school. We want to help grow this exciting sport in North East England by giving children and adults improved opportunities, so we can spread the joy further and give people a better chance to develop their potential.
