Barnes Rose Training Devon Coast to Coast

Donation protected
On Saturday 1st June we will be completing the distance of the coast to coast bike ride (157km), using the cardio machines in our gym, to raise money to buy a defibrillator and lockable external cabinet. We will be purchasing the debribrillator from the British Heart Foundation and any money raised over and above this will be donated to Look UK and The CVI Society. All of these charities have special significance to two of our long standing clients.

Sally's Story - An Incredible Journey
My most incredible adventure, which started as a dream, became a reality in May/June 2022 The Devon Coast to Coast cycle ride. 99 miles. Solo. My pedal power. Everyone told me it was a VERY TOUGH RIDE, full of hills, but I was determined to succeed (or die trying! )

So began my training journey with Harrison.

AND I DID IT; I completed the whole 99 miles, single-handed, solo, incredible life journey, walked and pushed the bike on the UPHILL steep bits, coasted down the downhills (the fastest speed reached was 39mph!!)

Fast forward one year, May 2023 – totally out of the blue, I suffered a severe heart attack at age 57. With a son age just 17, I had “No time to die!” (As James Bond would say)
So, upon returning to Harrison and the new gym in Stagsden, one of my first questions was, “Do you have a Defibrillator, and do you all know how to use it?” (Background on me: I used to be a Trainer for St John Ambulance, and Defibrillator (AED) training was one thing I taught)

So, I began my second life challenge: a) to carry on living, b) to continue my cardiac rehabilitation training with Harrison and finally, c) to help raise funds for a Defibrillator.

So, here we are, aiming to complete the same distance I did on my Devon Coast to Coast cycle ride, from Ilfracombe to Plymouth, of 99 miles (160 Km for you modern people) using a variety of Gym machines, cycling, rowing etc, in a morning, to raise enough funds to purchase a defibrillator for the Gatepost, and its ongoing upkeep, installation etc.

So, please sponsor us, give if you can, pop along and travel a mile with us (or buy a cake! I may very well bake some delicious goodies (naughty but nice) and join our efforts to save a life.

You do not have to be OLD or UNFIT to suffer a heart attack. Just recall the Luton Town player last year, Tom Lockyer, whose life was saved by a defibrillator.

So, there we are, 99 miles, easy, a mile for a life, not much to ask, a £1 for a mile (or a cake)

Zac's Story
My name is Zac, I’m 15. I am registered blind, I have autism and difficulties with co-ordinating my body. Barnes Rose has been helping me since I was 13 and it has really helped me physically but also my mental health. My life is a lot better than it used to be and this is thanks to Barnes Rose, my new special school and also some other special charities I’d like to fundraise for. These charities have helped me understand my disabilities and support me and my family a lot. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them.

LOOK UK are a charity that help visually impaired people. They do amazing things, but one of the things for me has been to give me a mentor. Her name is Kim, she is blind too. We meet as often as we can and talk about being visually impaired. She understands and gives me advice and we laugh a lot and share stories and ideas. LOOK UK also help my Mum and Dad. They give lots of support to parents.

Part of the reason I am blind is because I have a Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI). This means my brain doesn’t send the right messages so I can’t see things. It is quite scary and makes me anxious. The CVI Society is a small charity with amazing people who give their time to help people like me. A lady called Janet helped my Mum teach me braille when no-one else would help us. She helps train people how I need to learn at school and she is a brilliant person. The whole charity is very special to me.

The CVI Society and LOOK UK aren’t well known charities, so they don’t get much funding but they really deserve it. I want to change that and would be very happy if you could consider giving anything you can spare.

Thank you
Zac Hollinshead
