March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month to bring awareness to the 1.4 million people in our country currently living with colorectal cancer. With new diagnoses on the rise, it’s now expected that 1 in 24 people will be diagnosed in their lifetime. It was a shock when our Ally was diagnosed with a rare and advanced form of treatment-resistant colorectal cancer in 2024. After a year and a half of treatments ranging from surgery, chemo, and radiation, her remaining options for treatment were limited to clinical trials reliant on government support. Unfortunately, the expansion of these trials has been put on hold indefinitely.
Ally has always been a fighter. In advocating for her own health care, she’s found that many of the clinical trials here in the US have been the standard of care in other parts of the world for over a decade. Turns out medical tourism isn’t just for hair plugs and boob jobs; they do cancer treatments too! As we were researching the best treatment course, one thing became very clear: reputable international treatment comes with a high price tag that insurance won’t cover. The good news is that Ally is set to begin treatment in Barcelona this April. The less great news is that treatment will range from $150k-$250k. While steep, there’s no price tag you can put on life. This could be her best chance at survival, and we know it will be worth every penny.
Ally has always been the embodiment of unconditional love. She is the first to show up, the first to help, and the first to care. She has been a source of strength and love to so many of us. With her son starting college and her daughter planning a wedding, Ally is just at the start of a beautiful new chapter in her family’s life. We want her to be present and healthy for as much of that as possible. She deserves to enjoy that time, rather than being weighed down by the financial burden of paying for her medical needs. Since her diagnosis, so many have asked how to help. This is how we help her. We’re trying to raise as much money as we can to help cover these treatments and get her the best shot at managing this disease. Please give what you can; every little bit helps.
