Hi everyone! This is my friend Barbara Steele. Barbara has been in my life for I don't even know how many years. She works hard .... really hard. She went back to school after her children were grown, finished her degree at NC State and has found a meaningful job. But here's the kicker. She doesn't have health insurance. She is working in a temporary position while she looks for something permanent with heath insurance.
In June 2018, Barbara was diagnosed with glaucoma. Her doctor told her that 90% of her optic nerve is destroyed, and that without multiple prescriptions for eye drops, she would go blind. Barbara has kept up the eye drops for the past year, but the prescriptions expired this month and now they are all gone. She tried to get the prescription refilled, but the doctor won't refill the scripts until she has another exam, since it has been several months.
The eye exam is at least $600 and the prescriptions are $60 a month. Without health insurance, Barbara cannot afford the exam and once she saves a little more money after being unemployed, she will be able to pick back up the regular prescription.
Barbara is terrified of going blind. She has tried to get insurance through the ACA and cannot until open enrollment in November, but coverage won't start until January. She met with a healthcare navigator to figure out her options now and they told her there no options. She has asked her doctor for help and they have none to give. She has looked into getting SSDI, but you basically have to be blind in order to qualify for SSDI.
She has exhausted all avenues and so we are turning to you. If 25 people we know give $40 each, Barbara will have what she needs to get the eye exam and several months worth of her prescription.
We need better healthcare in this country, but we won't be able to fix that in time for Barbara. We can, collectively, all pitch in a little bit and help this woman with a beautiful soul get the medical help she needs and deserves to keep her vision and therefore keep a job and her quality of life.
