Barbara's Medical/Monthly Expenses
Donation protected
On March 28, 2017, our mom, Barbara LeFiell, was in a tragic accident while walking her dog. She experienced severe head trauma, a severe skull fracture, internal bleeding in the brain and abdomen, a laceration to her liver, and is experiencing swelling in her brain. Additionally, all her ribs on one side were broken and her spleen had to be removed. She has had multiple surgeries in which the skilled doctors at John Muir Hospital got the bleeding under control. Her trauma neuro specialist is very concerned with her head injury. Doctors and specialists are watching her 24-hours a day. After two weeks, mom is still unable to speak or move on command. Her doctors are now lowering her sedation to get a better reading of these neuro exams. We are expecting months, to possibly a year, of rehabilitation and possibly long term care. This is the optimistic outlook we are praying for, but at this time there are many unanswered questions. We are still a few weeks away from knowing the long-term effect of her brain injury.
Mom is an avid jewelry maker trying to launch her own brand. Knitting, crosswords and other puzzles are other favorite past times. She has two grown daughters (Sydney and Christina), a nine-year-old granddaughter, Gia, with another granddaughter on the way. We are hoping with everyone’s support we can get her back to the person she used to be, the mom we will always love.
We are at the beginning stages of a very long and arduous ordeal. Eventually the hospital will transfer mom to a long term acute care facility where she will reside for several months. Until we know more, we will be renting a storage unit to hold her belongings for an unknown period of time. Due to the uncertainty of her condition, the doctors have told our family that we will need patience to fully understand the extent of her needs.
As uncomfortable as this is for us, this is the reason we are asking for outside help. After researching some of the costs that can be associated with care and quality of life moving forward, we are hoping to meet our goal of $15,000 to cover all of mom’s expenses. While we appreciate sympathy, we are hoping compassion will compel you to help our family. Thank you all so much for taking the time to read Barbara’s story and to all the professionals who have got us to this point.
If you cannot help us financially, please consider donating blood. Mom was an avid blood and platelet donor and she would appreciate your support by donating blood yourself.
God Bless.
