Conor Voelz was severely injured in a firework accident over Memorial Day weekend. He was life lined via helicopter to the trauma unit at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Conor, who has been healthy and physically active all his life, now faces new and unexpected challenges. The accident caused devastating injuries, primarily to his right hand. He lost three fingers, and incurred major damage to his index finger, palm, and thumb. All of the bones in the back of his hand were fractured and most of the skin from his palm is gone.
It will be several months before he knows if he has function or feeling in his index finger and thumb. As of today, he has already had three surgeries to stabilize the damage. Currently, his hand has been surgically inserted into his outer abdominal cavity to regenerate skin and cell growth for an expected three week period. In late June, a medical team will determine the next steps. At this point, there are many unanswered questions about occupational therapy plans and future robotic prosthetic surgeries.
Although Conor has basic medical insurance, there will be many bills that will not likely be covered by insurance. All who know and love Conor are very thankful that this accident was not more tragic. We are grateful for the first responders, his medical team, and for his own resilience. We are also thankful for all the support from friends, family, and community that he has already been given.
This is just the beginning of a long and difficult journey. Conor and his family greatly appreciate any form of support. Monetary donations can be given through his Go Fund Me page. All donations go directly to expenses related to Conor’s medical needs and care.
