Banjo's Second Chance

Donation protected
On the morning of July 1st, I stumbled upon an Instagram reel featuring Banjo--a doe-eyed, rambunctious doberman kenneled in the crowded Devore animal shelter. The caption explained that Banjo was in urgent need of rescue, as he was scheduled to be euthanized that afternoon at 2pm. Across Los Angeles and surrounding regions, the situation is dire: most shelters are exceeding capacity over 200%. This means that dogs surrendered by owners, the product of greedy backyard breeders, or the result of inadequate resources for spaying and neutering never get the opportunity to live full lives.

The comment section on Banjo's post was filled with pledges to contribute to his care, but as is understandable in these situations, there was difficulty in getting him out in time. As those who know me might be aware, I recently lost my soulmate rescue doberman, Charlie, to metastatic lung cancer in June. Charlie entered my life in October 2020--a stray from Inglewood, CA--and together we forged a bond that healed our respective souls. Though initially traumatized and shutdown, love and dedication enabled Charlie to blossom into a more confident dobie; her unconditional love left an indelible imprint on my heart.

While I was and still am grieving Charlie's absence, I could not pass the opportunity to rescue Banjo from euthanasia. In my soul, I believe that the greatest way to honor to Charlie's memory is to give Banjo a second chance; to pour my love into another deserving dog that just happens to be her dobie doppelganger. It feels fated that we have found one another.

Though we have only spent a little over two weeks together thus far, I am committed to Banjo and his continued care and training. As per the shelter agreement, I took him to the vet to be neutered on 7/14. While the procedure itself went well, Banjo went into shock while under post-surgical care. At one point, when the vet called to update, she was unsure if he would recover--I was shaken and realized how quickly I had attached to him and his well-being.

On 7/15, Banjo was hospitalized to receive fluids and be more closely monitored. Though the transpiring hours were filled with great anxiety and uncertainty, he was able to return home later that day. Fortunately, he seems to be recovering well; eager to eat his meals and go on short walks. I'm immensely relieved, grateful, and dedicated to his continued recovery.

While Banjo's well-being is the first priority, I have since been tasked with covering his veterinary bills (paid on care credit). The outpouring of dedicated pledges on his Instagram reels are both touching and greatly appreciated; they gave me the extra nudge to save him from imminent euthanasia.

To provide full transparency, I will attach receipts outlining his vet care costs. Any additional donations will contribute to food and further training to ensure his success.

I respect that times are hard; I humbly welcome any assistance!

Warmly,
Keeley and Banjo
