Help us bring more live music to tango lovers!
Send "Bandoneon Massacre" to Orchestra Camp in July 2019!
We are "Bandoneon Massacre" – an Illinois tango orchestra in the style of the Argentine Golden Age. We love to make live tango music that's thrilling for dancers.
Our orchestra project started in 2012 -- part of the global movement of new-generation musicians exploring the tango dance orchestra styles of the 1940s. Dozens of musicians have played in our orchestra. Through their loving dedication of time, practice, and personal investment, we have built a two-hour repertoire of danceable tango music.
Now we want to up our game!
We have set our sights on a week-long tango orchestra intensive held July 2019 in Toronto, Canada. We're excited at the chance to study with the experts who will teach at the workshop—and bring new ideas and music home!
With this campaign, we're asking for DONATIONS TO HELP COVER WORKSHOP EXPENSES FOR SOME OF OUR MEMBER MUSICIANS.
About the
TORONTO TANGUERO WORKSHOP – JULY 14-20 2019
- The featured director is Julián Peralta, one of the most prominent tango artists and tango music educators in Argentina today. (Peralta is the author of what is so far the only book specifically on tango orchestra.)
- We will be coached in daily orchestra rehearsals, small ensemble rehearsals, classes in music arranging, and evening master classes.
- The workshop week culminates with two nights of performances by the participants: one a concert, the other a public dance.
- We will bring home a deeper understanding of tango music performance practices, improved instrumental skill, and 6-10 new repertory pieces.
- And we will play them for you!

MEET THE MUSICIANS WHO HOPE TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP WITH YOUR HELP
Chantelle Hougland - Viola
In a past life, Chantelle briefly studied music at the Longy School in Cambridge, Mass. Fast forward 22 years, she is now the highest paid, classically untrained violist on the East Central Illinois Argentine Tango circuit. Her band mates in Bandoneon Massacre will tell you that she is an accomplished Argentine Tango dancer masquerading as a violist. Fairly convincingly.
Gosia Konwerska- Guitar
Gosia began her musical adventures at the trying age of 13 - tormenting her parents by trying to learn guitar cords and sing at the same time. It was obvious she should not become a profesional musician nor ever sing in public. So the next best thing, obviously, was for Gosia to become a mathematician. Many moons had past when she randomly stumbled into the local tango dancing scene. Traditional tango music was not a love at first sight (though Piazzolla's was!). But when a few tango musician friends formed a learning group to explore tango music she was inextricably drawn in. The analytic approach to the study of tango music won her over and she's enjoyed playing with the band ever since. Now she is excited to learn more music and more, more, more tango. Gosia also loves cats and her cats love tango.
Janice Lee - Violin
Violinist. Doctorate in violin performance on the horizon. Janice looks forward to embarking on many more musical adventures and learning about the world through different styles of music. Attending this workshop brings her one step closer!
