Ban Horse Export Bus Campaign

Hi, I'm Danae Tonge and I co-organize Manitoba Animal Save. Manitoba Animal Save is a local chapter of the global Save Movement, and we work to end violence, exploitation and oppression of non-human animals through bearing witness, education, sanctuaries and community outreach.

Over the years, Canada has become a leading horse meat supplier and distributor, exporting thousands of draft horses each year. Most of the live horses are shipped to Japan where they are then slaughtered for thinly sliced horse flesh called "basashi", an expensive delicacy.

Three airports in Canada regularly ship horses to Japan for slaughter: Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton. In 2021, 1,902 horses were shipped overseas to be killed for meat. (https://canadianhorsedefencecoalition.org/)

Late last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued mandate letters to his Ministers. Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food was informed that the exports of live horses for slaughter are to be banned. Yet, these shipments continue to leave Winnipeg airport often, and Edmonton and Calgary airports near weekly.

This must end immediately, before more horses needlessly suffer.

Canadians want this ban on horse slaughter, and the Liberal government recognized that by putting it on their reelection platform. We must keep them accountable.

Enough is enough.

Horse export must be banned now.

With your help, we can raise $5500 which will help cover the costs of our ban horse export bus ads. For $5000 plus taxes, we can put up "Seventy Posters" (posters on the outside back of the bus) on twenty public buses. This bus campaign will run for 4 weeks, circulating our message throughout every corner of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Many Canadians aren't yet aware of this shameful industry happening at our own airports. These ads will provide mass public outreach, and pressure the Liberal government to keep their promise and enact the ban on horse export for slaughter.
