Aloha! Bamboo Fresh is a small sustainable café, located in the tourist district of Lahaina, on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Bamboo Fresh offers some of Maui’s highest quality, nutritious, fresh, locally sourced organic and natural foods, at an affordable price. At least 75% of our product offerings are sourced from Maui, which guarantees its freshness, while also fueling the Maui economic and agricultural community. Given the nature of corporate tourism, this island imports 90-95% of what it eats, which is shocking seeing we have the ability to grow almost everything here with our climate; and especially seeing the imports often show up as fried foods and burger joints in the Lahaina tourist district. In contrast, Bamboo Fresh offers healthy options in the form of wraps, salads, rice bowls, bagel sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies. We locally source almost all our fruits and vegetables, with seasonal restrictions, and our beef and pork are island raised, grass fed, never been frozen, and farm to oven…you really can’t get any fresher than that! Everything on the menu is made naturally, in house, from scratch, with tender love and care, by its owner and operator, Michelle and her dedicated crew. It’s been seven years since inception, and Bamboo Fresh has had to overcome a long series of difficult and unexpected challenges, including the 100% loss of our first location due to insurmountable plumbing and flooding issues. Determined and relying fully on borrowed funds, Bamboo Fresh reemerged at its current location, at the far end of the tourist strip, in the center of a complex, with little foot traffic, signage or advertising. Open seven days a week, as required in our lease, and with great dedication, Bamboo Fresh has managed to stay in operation for over six years now. However, due to the long and excessive operating, building and financial challenges, and despite the excellent food, great reviews, and local following, Bamboo Fresh has been a struggling operation, just barely breaking even and operating with a skeleton crew, unable to maximize its otherwise great potential.
In October/November of 2017, Bamboo Fresh lost a month of revenue, all employees and almost all our stock from a complex-wide power outage, which was set off by a severe storm. The cause was actually due to a neglected building related electrical issue, that Maui County had already cited the landlords on. The management verbally promised rent concessions, but when the power went back on, denied them to everyone. This put Bamboo Fresh in a financial tailspin that has continued ever since. When breaking even, it takes numerous months to recover from a month's loss of income. Instead of working with us to help recover from the loss, just six weeks after the power was restored, Bamboo Fresh received the first of now three demand notices, threatening eviction. The market has changed and they can more than double the rent, and given their aggressive demands, they probably already have someone lined up for it. What most people don’t realize, is that the lease was written with the requirement of a personal guarantee; meaning that the landlords can charge rents through the end of the lease term, whether they evict us or not, which they have stipulated in this recent letter, they intend to do. We can’t just move on to another location and start again, we’ll still have a year and a half to pay.
This is why we now turn to YOU. Our only option is to come up with a substantial amount of money in the next week, or shortly thereafter, to ride out the term of the lease and MOVE FORWARD, or the landlords will proceed with the eviction process.
