Character Education Forum - Atlanta

Let us get right to the important details.  We've posted more info below that will give you a better idea of who we are and what BAM is all about.

On October of this year, a group (18 high school students) of us are hoping to venture to Atlanta to attend the 22nd Annual National Forum on Character Education ( http://character.org/conference/).  As teenagers in St. Albert we know that we live in an amazing community and one that supports a long list of causes and events. In an effort to get us to Atlanta we, as a group, need to raise $3000!! Yeah we know that is a big amount of money and we are willing to work hard to raise it. This fundraising page is one way we thought could combine asking for money but in a way that was creative and that gives you a picture of what the money is going towards.

As a group we've come up with a few things to reward our donors.

0-$20: Your name is put into a draw to win 2 BAM T-Shirts.  They are American Apparel baseball tee's...so high quality.

$21 - $50: Your name is put into a draw to win $50 Tim Horton’s Card, Cloud 9 gift certificate, YMCA passes and other great prizes.

$51 - $100: We will come and wash your car!

$101 - $250: Shovel your driveway once a week for a month

$251 - $500:  A free round of golf for two at the Glendale Golf Course.

$500+:  10 of us will come to your house and do your fall yard clean up.  We are experts at raking leaves.

*We will be adding more prizes and draws in the days and weeks to come!!

MORE INFO ON THE CONFERENCE

This conference is important to us for a few reasons.  First it gives us chances to interact with youth and adults from around North America who carry the same passion for community as we do.  Secondly, we will have the opportunity to attend educational sessions that will help develop us as leaders and as people.  Thirdly, the knowledge we learn we want to take back to St. Albert to share with our peers.  Our plan to do this is by developing new ways to engage youth and creating new ideas for events and education workshops.  Our long-term goal is to put on our own local conference in the spring of 2016.  What is really exciting is we have a chance to present to the conference the story of BAM.  What is our story?  It actually all started with a conference in 2010....

WHAT IS BAM

In 2010 a conference on youth asset development was held in St. Albert.  Youth from the local junior high and high schools were invited to attend along with educators and youth service providers.  Though the conference included youth it did not include the input, ideas and experiences of the youth present.  On the last day of the conference eight of the teenagers in attendance approached the Youth Development Coordinator (Ben Huising) from the City of St. Albert to express their feelings of disappointment and frustration.  That discussion led to those eight students meeting a few weeks later to brainstorm ideas of how the 40 Developmental Assets could be put to action.  They called themselves BAM (Building Assets and Memories).

5 years, 250 youth and 40 000 volunteer hours later BAM For Youth is now a pillar in the community.  The mission statement of the group is to help youth connect to themselves, to other youth and to their community.  The guiding principles are simple: it has to be youth-for-youth, all youth are welcomed to join and everything that's done must accomplish the mission statement.

Those of us currently in high school continue to carry on the missions and goals of those who came before us.  With the over 80 youth currently involved in volunteering we keep working hard to make a difference and we believe we are.  Here are is a list of what we do each year in St. Albert:

·      Mentorship:  We are matched with elementary students and we spend an hour together each week focusing on building self-esteem and confidence in them.

·      Youville Home:  Friday evenings some of us go to the seniors home and help run their weekly recreation program.

·      Events:  We plan things that we know youth will find fun, safe and a place where they can have a positive experience.  Examples are Slip 'N on 7, BAM Bounce, BAMJAMS, Pumpkin Smash and Bash and the Caelin Porter Mental Health Awareness Walk.

·      Volunteering:  We support local organizations by coordinating their volunteer recruitment.  The Clean and Green Riverfest, Road Rage Ball Hockey Tourney, EEK!, Seven Music Fest are some examples.

·      Education:  During the school year we have been given the opportunity to give presentations at junior high schools on topics such as mental health, volunteerism, bullying, social media and the 40 Assets.

That is our story and the story continues.  We want to thank you in advance for considering being part of the next chapter.
