I will be 30 years old this month. I am a father to 2 AMAZING boys, Elliott and Samuel (soon to be 4 and recently turned 2), and husband to an amazing woman, Katie. My whole life I have been an athlete, scholar and man of many passions and hobbies. I've cycled across the United States, won high level shooting competitions, competed in strength sports at the national level and enjoyed hobbies such as knife making as well. I've been raising my boys to be passionate for the outdoors and to be as adventurous as I was as a kid. And for nearly a year now, I've barely been able to leave a couch or my bed.
I have lived with debilitating back pain for several years caused by my profession. Finally when I began losing function in my legs I sought out additional medical attention and met with a surgeon because chiropractic care, yoga and other remedies were failing to help. After going through a failed lumbar spine surgery last year, a 2nd surgery at the beginning of this year and now a bone/ disc infection from the most recent surgery my family and I are desperately seeking alternative treatments and equipment to assist in my recovery.
Unfortunately the measures we are seeking are NOT covered by my insurance even though it is proven to aid in recovery and potentially returning to full health. As much as I would like to be able to pay for it all out of pocket, the numbers are quickly adding up. Add to that multiple recent hospital stays, commuting to and from and an uncertain future for my career we are trying to make everything work.
All I want to do is be able to hold my boys without fear of my back literally breaking again (the infection is currently causing decay of the disc and vertebrae) and to be there as a partner to my wife. For those that know me and my family, physical health has always been a major part of our lives, and now I am barely able to leave a couch or bed most days without heavy medication. I feel if I leave my recovery up to the current plan, the degeneration will go too far.
