Balbino Rosen was a rare individual in the world—the kind of human we desperately need more of. He radiated kindness, was phenomenally generous, and extended genuine caring to all he encountered. Unfortunately, Balbino died on July 11, 2021 at the age of 47, due to complications from prostate cancer.
Despite our grief, we are inspired to help his wife, Ama, and five-year-old daughter, Kailani, rise from the ashes of the trauma of losing him. We feel deeply that they can come through this sad time to a place where they can feel gratitude; knowing that along with the pain of losing Balbino, a wonderful thing was born in his wake. While he is gone in physical form, his energy—a robust spirit of kindness and generosity—can endure. For Kailani, the always-present experience of losing her dad at such a young age will converge with the birth of an initiative that beautifully projects and perpetuates her dad’s energy. Our hope is that their pain will fuse with the warm outpouring of those who want to amplify the kind of love and generosity Balbino brought to the world.
To honor Balbino’s memory, we are asking those interested in Kai and Ama’s future to help fund our creation of a simple corporation to execute our dream of celebrating and spreading kindness. Our plan is to establish an entity with the purpose of making kindness more common—to help further an “economy of kindness.” Considering the premise that we all need opportunities to put more compassion in the world, financial and other contributions can help us work to make kindness a dominant value. We will take these gifts and establish a “for kindness” enterprise to bring relief and comfort to those in particular need.
Ama could tend to this project for the foreseeable future. She spent many years working in disaster recovery and has always looked for ways to ease challenges for people going through the pain of loss. She’s volunteered thousands of hours driven by her desire to show kindness and give hope to those experiencing adversity. Running the initiative is a job that would allow Ama the space she needs to heal and tend to Kai, while simultaneously paying the generosity of others forward through this entity that will make kindness more common and abundant. This effort can partially offset the deep sadness of losing the physical presence of Balbino by creating something that will live on and make the world more “Balbinoful.”
