My dad Roy has very fast-progressing Parkinson's disease with an early onset at the age of 47 - he is now 52. He also has a highly aggressive form of blood cancer, which is believed to be the cause of his Parkinson's in this rare case. There is no cure for Parkinson's disease, and his symptoms will only get worse.
The side effects caused by his required medications are almost as terrible and debilitating as the diseases themselves. In a very short amount of time, I have watched my father go from being strong and muscular to small and weak. Most people know him to be mentally sharp and clever, but he is now in a permanent state of mental fog, confusion, and severe psychosis. My dad has occupied several skilled positions in his interesting career, but he is no longer able to do any of the work he used to love so much.
Taking care of my dad has become a full-time job, and nobody in the family is able to do it anymore. We need a professional caregiver team to help us move forward. We never could have anticipated his sharp decline, and we need help paying for his expensive medical needs. My sisters and I are in our 20's, and we do not have the kind of income necessary to support our dad.
The advanced stage of his Parkinson's is incredibly rare for a man of his age, and it is abnormally fast-progressing as well. It won't be long before the Parkinson's takes over completely, and the cost of his care will only increase.
I'm calling on friends and family to help get my dad the professional care he needs and deserves. The unexpected velocity of his decline has deeply disturbed me and my sisters.
