Simon Silander and his wife Danielle Hampton moved to Hockley Valley from Downtown Toronto in 2012 after 10 years of running a small chain of bakeries; Brick Street Bakery had its first location in The Distillery District when the site was still used for movie shoots as well as a storage yard. The area became 'gentrified' and they expanded to 4 stores over 10 years
They fell in love with Hockley Valley the first time they visited and decided to develop a strategy to leave Toronto for the beauty of The Valley
They sold EVERYTHING
Beginning with farmers markets and eventually supplying many establishments in the area with fine handcrafted organic breads they have become one of the regions most well loved bakeries 100 Acre Bakery
Everything was moving along nicely , with plans to open a small retail bakery/café in Caledon E by early Jan 2020
There three children were looking forward to earning some 'pocket money' by waiting tables and cleaning up after customers. Silas 10, Billie 8 and Sielle 3 have certainly been brought up in the 'baker's lifestyle' (early to rise, late to bed !!;
Unfortunately the family's dreams were shattered on Thursday Dec 12 , 2019 just before midnight
Simon opened the back door of their house to get some firewood on the stove when he saw his bakery glowing orange!
The bakery was on fire!!
And it was only 30 feet from their house!
A panicked 10minutes followed waking up the kids and getting clothes on everyone in case the fire spread to the house!!
Fortunately for them there was no wind to speak of and the flames leapt straight up
The fire dept were there as soon as they were able and did the best they could to control the burning structure
However, it was impossible to curb the fire
The building and all equipment was completely destroyed.
It seems that the insurance company had not insured the 'structure' only the contents
Probably because of exactly what in the end took place...
The building was wood and quite a distance from fire halls as well as there being no fire hydrants in the vicinity
So this young family have had a pretty sad start to their Xmas season. No puddings or tarts can be made for their customers this year. No bread for the foreseeable future:(
If you've ever met The Silanders or eaten their fine organic sourdoughs then you know they did what they did with the utmost pride and integrity
A sad day for a good family ,
LETS HELP THEM REBUILD and bring back a local business hit with hard times this holiday season
I am a close friend of the family and live in Orangeville On
All funds collected will be put into a bank draft and delivered directly to Simon and Danielle by me to purchase a prefab building or building material in order for them to rebuild there Bakery
