On June 12th, Cauy and Kaci Lindsay went into the hospital excited to welcome their baby boy. During labor, complications arose. Baby Baker was delivered in an unfavorable position and was not breathing at birth. He was immediately rushed to the NICU, where doctors began life-saving interventions. Baker was placed on a ventilator to assist his breathing, received a chest tube to drain his lungs, and was started on cooling therapy in an effort to minimize further brain injury. An extended amount of time passed before they were able to get a sufficient read on his oxygen. The amount of time that he had gone without oxygen was unknown. After several days, an MRI revealed that Baker had suffered severe Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), a condition caused by a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain during birth. This diagnosis revealed that he had experienced a high level of damage to main parts of his brain. Severe HIE can result in long-term medical challenges including developmental delays, mobility issues, and other serious health concerns. Where hope still exists, the reality of need is apparent.

Baker’s road ahead is uncertain. He remains in the NICU, and his discharge date is unknown. His journey will likely involve extensive medical care, therapy, equipment, and ongoing support throughout his life. Cauy and Kaci are deeply grateful for the love and support surrounding them. While emotional strength and community mean everything right now, there is also a financial reality they must face. After insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for NICU care, therapies, equipment, at-home care, and long-term needs will be substantial through their sweet boy's life. Any support can help ease the weight of what has happened.
