Bake Local, Act Global

Hi, my name is Lisa Owen, and I am incredibly proud to take senior responsibility as Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major at my Combined Cadet Force at Caroline Chisholm School.

This year, I have been extremely fortunate to be one of the 12 finalists in the Cadet Vocational College’s Westminster Award, a national competition that celebrates young people who have shown selflessness, community spirit, and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.

Next month, we will be embarking on a 10 day expedition that will take place in both Calshot, Southampton and Brecon Beacons in Wales, centred around this year’s theme:

“Think Global, Act Local”

Throughout the expedition, we will be working with organisations and charities involved in:

• Conservation and protection of local wildlife and ecosystems

• Sea safety training with the RNLI

• Specialist mountain search and rescue teams

• Understanding our impact on the environment and how we can protect it for the future

As part of this opportunity, we are also taking on a fundraising challenge, and this is where I would be incredibly grateful for your support. Hopefully, if you’re local, you can also get involved by ordering some homemade treats!

Where Your Donation Will Go:

A portion of the funds raised will go towards helping disadvantaged younger cadets across the UK to gain access to the Level 1 BTEC qualification. This will provide young people with the opportunity to build confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.

The remaining funds will be donated to one of the charities we will be working with during the expedition, which will be chosen collectively by all 12 finalists based on the impact we witness first-hand throughout the journey.

This experience means a great deal to me, not just personally, but because it’s a chance to give back to the cadet community and support causes that genuinely make a difference.
