Bailey's Life Saving ER Stay
Donation protected
Greetings Everyone! My name is Brandy and on Saturday, November 18, 2023, I woke up to my sweet 1 year old pup Bailey (some of you may have previously known her as Lilly) had vomited white foam and clear liquid. While cleaning up the mess she vomited 2 more times. At that point, I knew it could be something worse and took her to ER.
Bailey ended up staying overnight for observation and had several x-rays done and a nasal type tube in to drain fluid. With the x-rays they didn't see a blockage and they weren't very successful draining fluid from her stomach with a nasal tube so the recommended to place her under anesthesia to do a tube in the esophagus to drain her stomach. When they did that they were able to drain 800ml however fluid came right back and still wasn't going into the intestines.
On Sunday, the vet called and said she had not gotten better and it was suggested to do a surgery to look inside. With this surgery, it may of not of solved or found anything but it was almost the only option or have to say goodbye to Bailey. I agreed to the surgery and when I spoke to the surgeon after, she advised that Bailey's stomach was turning over onto some other organs. They were able to do another gastropexy while doing her surgery and removed kibble in her stomach that turned sand like. A biopsy was also sent of her GI tract and we are still waiting for results.
Monday morning when I spoke to the vet to hear about her overnight stay after surgery, I learned she got pneumonia in her right lung as the doctor was hearing crackles. They were also worried she may have megaesophagus or maybe was having issues from the tube. She was having issues swallowing and making coughing like sounds. So now they recommended her to be placed on O2 while being treated for pneumonia as well. She hasn't been wanting to eat either
so she gets it through a tube. So instead of leaving Wednesday she may now leave Friday or Saturday depending of course.
On a positive note when I saw her yesterday and today she ate shredded chicken from my hand. Not a lot but it is better than nothing. She still has the cough and they are monitoring her esophagus. They also have given her a appetite stimulant this evening to try to get her to eat some more. She is slowly being weened off O2.
I know there is probably several things I am forgetting as this has been a long process to narrow down the issue. However, the one thing is certain Bailey's ER bill is estimated to be around 10,000 dollars now which is why I am reaching out to others to possibly help if they are able.
This isn't Bailey's first time facing obstacles in her young life. She was rescued this year from a hoarding case and had a huge hernia that she had to have removed and it caused her to walk differently. When I met her at the sanctuary, I fell in love and knew she had to come home with me. She is the sweetest dog and knows nothing but love!
Thank you for taking the time to read about Bailey's journey.
