Bahamas Clean Water Relief

Donation protected
UPDATE Wow!! I can not believe we have raised more than my original goal of $1250 in less a week!! 25 Uzima Filters are en route to the Bahamas now. The amazing response from our community has inspired me to raise our goal to $2500, which would let us send 100 filters total to the people of the Bahamas! Thank you to everyone who lends their support- Shawn

My name is Shawn Goyal, and I am a High School student in Birmingham, Alabama. I am raising money to send Water Filters to the Bahamas for disaster relief after Hurricane Dorian. Many of us have witnessed the destruction the hurricane had on the region on the news. It is heartwarming to see the swift response the international community has given to those in need. I want to continue the aid by sending Uzima Water Filters to the region; after a cataclysmic event like Dorian, supplying water and other basic necessities is vital.

Why Water Filters?
We have all had a 7th grade science teacher tell us that human beings are 70% water. Water is essential to our lives. We use it to drink, to cook, to water plants, to clean, and so much more. After Hurricane Dorian, the infrastructure to supply potable water in the Bahamas is damaged. The advantage of sending water filters as opposed to bottles of clean water is that they can solve the need for clean water on an infrastructural level. The Uzima Water Filters that I am sending can provide an entire family with clean water. They filter 5-gallons of water in a matter of minutes, and none of the parts need to be replaced or replenished. As long as the filter is cleaned properly, it will last up to 10 years! Even for families who can receive or purchase water bottles right now, the filters will provide a free, long-lasting alternative, allowing them to spend money on food, clothes, or rebuilding instead of water (not to mention the plastic saved!).

In the Past...
Two years ago, I sent 175 Uzima Filters to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Those filters went to families in San Juan, mountain communities, and churches throughout the island. Last summer, I travelled to Puerto Rico with another 60 filters and delivered them to people in need. I have seen firsthand how these filters can help a family, and now that the people of the Bahamas have a similar need I am eager to help!

Where will my money go?
Each Uzima filter kit costs $25, including the cleaning syringe. My goal of $1,250 will be enough to send 50 water filters, and help 50 families. I will send the money raised in this campaign to the Uzima Clean Water Foundation, who will then send filters to the Ludacris Foundation to be distributed throughout the Bahamas to those who need them most.
