Norma Kernis is 98 years young. She has lived through the invention of the television, the Great Depression, World War II, the outlaw of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in the United States, the moon landing, the Stonewall Uprising, the first woman being appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the first African American voted into presidential office. And on July 10, she lived through a serious stroke.
Her beloved son Paul, who for many years has taken the time to travel the 2+ hours roundtrip from Hasbrouck Heights, NJ to Monroe Township, NJ multiple times per week to help her with appointments, shopping, and simply take her out for lunch and a movie, has had to quit his job in order to provide the round-the-clock care she needs. He is now without medical insurance, and having difficulty making ends meet in order to pay his mortgage and other expenses. Prior to last week, both Norma and Paul had been living in her home in an adult community—which is reverse mortgaged—and barely getting by on her social security.
While Norma has a long road to physical recovery ahead of her, her mind remains as sharp as ever. She is still in the hospital at present, but was able to stand with assistance, and has been anxiously inquiring with her visitors as to news from the outside. Paul is exploring rehabilitation facility options, but the cost is astronomical—to the tune of a 40%+ out of pocket expense. That's where you come in.
With your help—and any little bit truly does help—we can give Norma and Paul the support they need, and access to resources essential to her recovery. Let's get our favorite nonagenarian "back to Norma."
