John Flinn is a husband and father of two boys, ages 3 and 1. He has been in law enforcement since 2013. In addition he is also a volunteer firefighter, having first joined at the age of 14. He comes from a line of public servants; his grandfather is a former police officer and his father and uncle are firefighters. John has always wanted to serve the community as it has been his calling since a young age.
John’s life has been turned upside down since March 8, 2018. On that day he was on duty as a police officer and responded to a disturbance call at a behavioral group home. While responding, officers were advised several consumers were fighting and armed with weapons. As John arrived as the secondary officer, the initial officer on location had to subdue the aggressive consumer. The first arriving officer had to forcibly take the consumer to the ground, as she refused to comply with commands. As John assisted in taking the consumer into custody further use of force was required by both officers in order to secure the subject in handcuffs.
As a result of responding to the incident John was hurled into what seems to be a never ending legal battle to clear his name and to return to work. He has been suspended since March 15, 2018. This legal battle has put John and his family through a difficult and trying time. His youngest son having been born during this ordeal. John has lost approximately $115,000 in salary over the past 16 months. That money is much needed to support his young family let alone having to pay for legal fees in addition. John has Incurred over $20,000 in legal fees so far in order to clear his name. The cost keeps adding up with each court appearance. Often times his defense team arrives ready to proceed only to have delays and postponements from the prosecution. There is no definitive trial date set and John looks foreword to his day in court to be able to clear his name. His family and friends have been by his side since the inception of this ordeal.
His supporters are puzzled with how this event has unfolded. There was no investigation of the first arriving officer and he remains working. It calls into question the motivations behind the allegations as two officers were involved in the incident but only one is now having to defend his legal actions.
We appreciate anything you can donate to assist John and his young family through this difficult and trying time.
