Support for Jennifer & Donald Sliva Family

Donation protected

My brother-in-law, Donald Sliva, had a car accident and a subsequent spinal cord injury on May 16, 2020.
He was driving to work when his car hydroplaned into a barrier wall on the freeway.  We were later told (by a man that stopped to help push Donald's car off the road) that his car was almost hit by an 18 wheeler which would have surely ended his life.
He was taken to the hospital by ambulance with 2 gashes in his head (which required 19 staples) and a crushed T6 vertebrae in his spine.  While in neurosurgery for 7 hours, doctors put rods and screws in to fuse his spine and found a spinal cord contusion.

Donald is currently paralyzed, in a wheelchair and has no sensation below the chest. He was in ICU at Kingwood Medical Center for 6 days, then transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann in downtown Houston for inpatient rehab. After 5 weeks @ TIRR, he was finally discharged to go home. The family is not only happy that he's home but still alive! Being home brings new challenges and many adjustments. Their home is not wheelchair accessible so he has to sleep in a hospital bed downstairs. He's working very hard in physical & occupational therapy to build upper body strength and his core muscles. As he says, "its like balancing a bowling ball on a balloon". He has a very long road to recovery.
Donald was a mechanical assembler in the oil/gas industry & the sole provider for the family. Since the accident, Jennifer has been his full-time (and only) caregiver. They are struggling financially to pay living expenses such as mortgage, utilities, food and transportation. His medical insurance does not cover some ongoing medical supplies, medicine and equipment used for daily care.

I'm sure you know the saying "when it rains, it pours".  In September, their family was involved in another accident and Jennifer's vehicle was totaled. Their only option was to purchase another vehicle so Donald could continue to go to outpatient therapy and doctor appointments. After 6 months on disability and no estimated date of return to work, Donald's job was terminated. This forced them to enroll in COBRA for $1500/month to continue medical insurance for the family. On top of the monthly COBRA payment, a deductible of $6000 will begin in January.

Donald and Jennifer have overcome many challenges this year and they need our help. With determination, perseverance and strong faith, they continue to stand firm on God's promise to protect and provide. Please consider donating.  Any amount big or small would be greatly appreciated. If you're unable to donate, please pray for Donald, Jennifer, Tanner & Sydney.
