Friends and Family,
I never thought I’d start a Go Fund Me Page, but I felt compelled when I learned of the overwhelming and heartbreaking situation facing my young cousin and his family. Jessica and John Kotsis are a love story: Jr. High sweethearts who nurtured their love to adulthood and wed in 2016. They welcomed daughter Rowan into the world in 2020. In 2022 they were excited to welcome their son, Yanni, but unfortunately, the pregnancy was met with complications that totally uprooted their life.
Baby Yanni was born prematurely at 30 weeks gestation following a maternal pregnancy complicated by a gross premature uterine rupture of membranes at 28 weeks gestation and intra-amniotic infection. Yanni was born via emergency c-section to save his mother and his life. When Yanni was born his lungs were collapsed making him unable to breath on his own and was not expected to make it throughout the night. In a last effort to save Yanni, the NICU team used a diuretic to extract the fluid from his lungs and moved him to a larger respirator that he utilized for most of his time in NICU. During the majority of Yanni’s stay, he was fed through a feeding tube. Yanni required intubation and ventilation to assist with his lungs and tested positive for E-coli and sepsis. While in the NICU other diagnoses included: bilateral inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, abnormal metabolic screening, chronic lung disease, ROP, anemia of prematurity, apnea of prematurity, immature thermoregulation, and respiratory distress of newborn. Yanni was discharged from the NICU after 50 days. Since his discharge from the NICU, he has had three surgeries and one procedure.
Yanni has been diagnosed with Methylmalonic Acidemia, a very rare and life threatening condition. He is still undergoing genetic testing for further diagnosis and answers. We don’t know what Yanni’s future holds, but what I do know is that John and Jessica’s future is now totally focused on finding the best care for Yanni.
Between these unforeseen medical expenses, specialists, and loss of one income to care for Yanni around the clock, this young couple is facing significant challenges. They would never ask for help, so I am reaching out to my friends and family instead. I hope those who can contribute a little to help this beautiful young family through this crisis will donate.
Thank you so much.
