Baby Sakmar Needs Your Help

Please Help Baby Sakmar!!

Alexander and Jessica Sakmar are a young couple, both nurses and working on their family.  Their first Son Jude, is pictured with them above and this tiny little face is baby #2.  Jessica is due in June and everything was going well until their 20 week anatomy check.  

At the midpoint in her pregnancy, when most people are celebrating the reveal of their baby’s sex, Jess and Alex found out that their growing peanut has a very serious heart defect that may pack some grave consequences.  Baby Sakmar has the critical heart defect called Transposition of the Great Arteries.  This congenital defect occurs when the Aorta and the Pulmonary arteries are reversed causing the heart to work improperly and preventing the blood in the babies body from getting oxygenated.  As a result, babies born with this defect are usually blue and have low blood oxygen levels.  Without immediate surgical intervention and proper subsequent surgeries, this condition can be fatal.  

Jessica and Alex have decided to give their child the best chance they can and have teamed up with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to build a treatment plan that gives their child the best chances of survival with minimal residual side effects.  However, that plan involves Jessica taking her toddler, being displaced from home in a temporary residence in Philadelphia from 36 weeks on, while Alex does his best to continue working in the ER at Wayne Memorial Hospital and commuting back and forth to see his wife and child, until he himself has to take a leave of absence.

These two amazing people are great nurses and great parents, awesome co-workers, and members of our Wayne Memorial ER community.  They face a long journey over the next 3-6 months, that will be emotionally and financially taxing.  We are asking for your help to make it easier for them to fight for their child’s life and recovery!
