My name is Corie. I am starting this GoFundMe for my brother and sister-in-law (Kyle and Jennifer, both Army war veterans) who just welcomed their newest little baby boy, Rowan Lou.
In ureto... he was diagnosed with SUA, which is a Single Umbilical Artery with an additional condition called a Varix, which could cause developmental heart issues. To try and gain a better understanding of potential conditions and syndromes, genetic testing was started with an amniocentesis, which resulted in a 1 in 500 chance of a uterine sack rupture, his doctors and parents were not sure he would survive. Luckily, the rupture healed, but as he grew scans showed him to have Hyperspadious and Chordee, 2 defects of his genitals which were determined to be the most severe case possible. The diagnosis so far concluded that Rowan would need multiple surgeries, most likely 3 to gain proper functionality.
Unfortunately, Rowan’s troubles did not end there. At birth, he wasn't breathing and suffered a lack of oxygen for 3 minutes, but the effects if any of that haven't been diagnosed yet. Further assessments showed more defects, like Microtia the undevelopement of his right ear that resulted in a deformity and possible loss of hearing. The most serious a diagnosis of all is Tracheoesophageal Fistula (TEF). Rowan was rushed to Children’s Hospital for immediate care and had surgery at 1 day old to correct a Fistula affecting his esophagus and trachea. The surgery was partly successful, but they were unable to attach his esophagus to his stomach therefore he cannot eat or drink by mouth. Upon further testing it was determined his SUA did cause 2 holes in his heart. His doctors hope they will heal and close in time but are unsure.
Rowan is currently in the NICU where he will spend the next 3 months getting stronger in preparation for a second surgery at 3 months old. In addition, due to all of his conditions he is expected to have a minimum of 6 surgeries all together.
He has a very long road ahead of him. His mom, dad, and big brother could use all the help and support that they could receive, as he has only had one of the multiple surgeries that are in his future. Currently, mom and dad are traveling 40 minutes both ways to try to be there for Baby Ro with only 1 vehicle. They want to be there as much as possible, while being working parents, trying to maintain a stable environment for Rowans older brother Jax (almost 4) and prepare for the unimaginable medical debt to come as NICU stays and surgeries are extremely expensive. Thank you in advance for your time reading about sweet baby Ro, consideration of a donation and sharing his story.
