Birth and NICU
Lucy was born on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. Immediately after her birth, Lucy needed assistance breathing and was intubated and taken to the NICU where they were able to stabilize her and provide further care. While there were some known complications coming into delivery day, it was realized that Lucy had also been lacking good oxygen for a few days prior. The doctors began a full-body cooling process to prioritize blood flow to the vital organs that may have been damaged. While they were able to stabilize her, doctors determined that their care alone would not be sustainable. After just 36 hours of cooling and additional efforts to improve blood oxygen levels, Lucy was transferred to another hospital.
Transfer and stay
On February 22nd, Lucy was transferred to another nearby hospital in Chicago where they have additional resources and expertise available if ECMO (heart/lung bypass) is needed. Justin and Sam have since been staying at a Ronald McDonald House (RMH) where they have been able to be with Lucy during the day, and return to their room at night for rest.
Current Needs for Lucy and her family
While this GoFundMe was initially created to help provide Sam and Justin with meals for their first few months, their need has grown. The greatest financial need currently is the growing costs of medical bills for Lucy’s care.
Most importantly this family needs prayer, for healing for their baby, and guidance for all doctors and caregivers involved.
Thank you for your prayers and support for Justin, Sam, and Lucy as we hope to lighten their financial burdens as they care for baby Lucy! ❤️
