Baby Michael Support Fund

Sarah and Josh Barton's Baby Michael has Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrom).  That means that he has an extra #18 chromosome. Unlike Down syndrome, which also is caused by an extra chromosome, the developmental issues caused by Trisomy 18 are associated with more medical complications that are more potentially life-threatening in the early months and years of life.  Almost every major organ system is affected. Many have heart defects, trouble feeding and end up with a failure to thrive diagnosis. The average lifespan of infants born with this condition is 3 days to 2 weeks. Studies show that 60% - 75% of children survive for 24 hours, 20% - 60% for 1 week, 22% - 44% for 1 month, 9% - 18% for 6 months, and 5% - 10% for over 1 year.  It is difficult to predict the life expectancy of a baby with trisomy 18 if the baby does not have any immediate life-threatening problems, making it impossible to predict the outcome. 

If baby Michael lives, he will need intense, full time care. He will not be able to walk, talk, feed himself, and have severe developmental delays. This kind of health care will only be partially covered by health insurance. Even with all of this assistance, he may still pass away before his first birthday.  As many of you know, the cost of funeral expenses can be a huge burden. Especially after all the medical bills that will continue to increase as he gets older. 

There is a chance he will be a stillborn, and in that case, funeral arrangements will still need to be made. This is a difficult situation. We ask for any support you can give, whether that be financially, prayers, or maybe even just messages of love. Sarah and Josh will certainly need it.
