Baby West Emergency Surgery
It's been a long week with baby Layton needing emergency surgery.
He was admitted, life flighted, in and out of emergency surgery, and in the ICU in under 24 hours.
He will be in the ICU for about a week or so with a second surgery coming in the next few months.
Zach and Nicole took Layton to the ER early Sunday afternoon because he was extremely tired, not eating, and started vomiting. They thought he was just dehydrated. After sitting in the ER with no changes and more vomiting until about 9:30pm, they finally got admitted. Baby Layton got worse overnight, and the doctor first thing this morning decided it was time to transport him. His belly was extremely distended, and he was in so much pain.
They were transferred via life flight to Mt. Timpanogos hospital. Within an hour of arriving, they had done a CT and declared Baby Layton needed emergency surgery. His intestines were blocked somehow. Once in surgery, they found that some tissue had wrapped and grown around part of his small intestine, completely cutting off blood flow to his large intestine.
During surgery, the doctors were able to find and remove the piece of tissue that had caused the issue. In addition to that, they had to remove 1/3 of his intestines and his appendix.
Baby Layton's recovery will be extensive over the next few months while staying in the ICU for about another week, and he will have an iliostomy bag for the next 3-4 months. At that point, a second surgery will happen to reconnect all of his system.
