Baby Jolene is here! She arrived a bit sooner than Paige and Joe expected, but she is here, she is strong, and she is beautiful!
After some birthing complications and a transfusion, Paige did wonderfully and is recovering well.
Jolene Elizabeth Renee Mercado arrived on the morning of June 26, 2020, nine weeks early. She weighs 4-lbs 2-oz and is 19 inches long (future WNBA player!).
She was born at Mercy Hospital, in Springfield Missouri, which is two hours from Paige and Joe’s house. Being nine weeks early and only 4-lbs 2-oz, she must stay in the hospital until at least her due date, the second week of August. As a parent, the thought of being two hours away from your newborn must be excruciating and unbearable.
In normal times, families have the option of staying at the Ronald McDonald House, at a subsidized rate, while their newborn stays in the NICU. Unfortunately, due to COVID, the RonaldMcDonald House may not be available. Either way, Paige and Joe will be experiencing a loss of income so Joe can be present as much as possible the first weeks of Jolene’s life and be available to emotionally support Paige through this difficult time, which is important for a family. In addition to lost income, they will have to cover the cost of their gas and expenses to either go back and forth to Springfield daily and/or the funds to cover the cost of an extended stay hotel, near the hospital. Being nearby allows them to experience the extremely important “touch time” with Baby JoJo every few hours each day and feed her naturally.
